News and New Releases for October 2019

New Releases are coming! Starting this December, you'll have a new series to sink your teeth into. Jane and I have been slaving away to get this series ready on time. Books 1 and 2 are finished and have been sent to the publisher. Book 3 is nearly done. I'm so excited! Readers are going to fall in love with Smoke and Phoebe. Will she defeat the 7 deadly sins or be sent back to Hell? Oh the drama. Oh the anticipation.

An escaped demon and a snarky cat face off against the seven deadly sins.

Escaping from Hell was just the beginning of Phoebe’s problems. In Hell, she had a position of legend. A marquis of torture. But on the human plane, she is just another New York City destitute.

Before she has a chance to get her bearings on the unforgiving streets, Fate steps in and offers her a chance at redemption, but it doesn’t come cheap.

She must bring in the demons that escaped alongside her while making sure no humans are harmed in the process. In order to do that, she needs to learn to live in the human world with the help of another one of Fate’s parolees, a snarky cat named Smoke.

If it means never seeing the halls of Hell again, Phoebe will do anything, even battle the seven deadly sins single-handed.

A malevolent benefactor is collecting demons. Will Phoebe survive the culling?

It has been months since Phoebe was able to knock off two of the seven deadly sins. When a succubus shows up at a popular nightclub in the East Village, stripping all inhibitions from her human victims before they succumb to death by lust, Phoebe must step into battle.

But the danger isn’t just the succubus. A malevolent benefactor is collecting demons, one that poses a bigger threat to all humankind.

When Phoebe goes to take down the succubus, she gets caught up in the fray. Will she be led to her own walk of shame, or worse, to her death?

Are you excited? I am!! Book three is going to be finished soon. You'll be among the first to see the cover revealed when it happens!

In other news....

So, if you remember my message about a month ago, I've had some pretty bad luck in the job department. That has led me to take a different direction with things. Rather than sitting on my butt, I want to do something productive with the skills I have. I've been in the publishing industry for ten years. In that time I have learned quite a bit. Between teaching classes on creative writing and story craft, to cover art and book layout, I have a lot I can offer new authors. So I'm opening up Rising Sign Books to Publishing Assistance.

An extra set of eyes, impartial to the story, can often clarify any issues and offer encouraging
direction to help move you forward.

Katie Salidas Fantasy AuthorThere exists a certain structure to storytelling that creates optimal story flow, known as beats, these are important moments that should come naturally within the plot structure: introduction, exposition, rising action, climax, and resolution.

I can help you identify whether or not you are hitting the right beats within your story and offer options to you on how you might best reach those points. We will look at characters, arcs, and your overall voice for the story.

World Building Basics

Understanding the rules and elements of a world in order to create a believable playground for your story: Geography, Climate, Plants, Animals, Technology, Creatures, & Society.

Character Creation

If a reader doesn’t care about your characters, they won’t care about your story! Learn the different archetypes and how to use them as the blueprint for developing characters your readers will care about.

Understanding Beats & Plot Structure

At its core, plot is characters and setting in conflict. A writer's job is to judiciously use conflict while keeping characters on a steady path toward the story's goal.

The First Draft is Supposed to Suck!

It’s time to stop procrastinating and write that book! We’re going to dispel all the fears and excuses most would-be writers use to avoid finishing that novel they’ve been dreaming about.

How my manuscript critiquing services work:
My rates are $35 per hour. Before we begin work, I'll discuss with you the genre, chapter, and word count of your current manuscript. From thee I'll give you an estimate on how many hours it will take me to review and notate your manuscript. This way we both go into this process with clear understanding of time involved and cost. Once we agree on the hours this project will take, I'll send over an invoice for that amount. 50% of the invoice is due at time of service with the remainder due when I return your document with notes.

Affordable and quality book formatting for your Novel!

Formatting is a special kind of skill, and Word, while great for writing a book, is not the best at outputting the correct layout for the different styles needed. Ebooks for example come in two flavors: KDP requires Mobi, while all other retailers use Epub. I can convert both of those as well as create the PDF version for print (hardcover and soft) to work with your printer.

Book Formatting Services include the following:

  • Professional layout
  • Copyright page
  • Table of Contents (clickable for ebook)
  • Active Hyperlinks (clickable for ebooks)
  • Acknowledgements, Forwards, and Dedications
  • Custom Chapter headers (starting on the right page)
  • Paragraphs formatting, Indenting, and Drop Caps (if requested)
  • Bullets, number lists
  • Custom Header & Footer
  • Page Numbering

For Ebooks:
You will receive your book in 3 eBook formats, Mobi (Kindle), ePub, and a source file Word.doc, ready to upload to or Draft2Digital. If you need any additional formats please let me know within 30 days of service.

For Print Books:
When completed, you will receive a PDF draft of your completed book layout for you to review before the final PDF is made. PDF’s will be delivered in a print-ready format based on your trim size and printer specifications.

My fee is $35 per hour. Formatting jobs vary depending on how long or complicated the manuscript is and how many versions need to be created. We will discuss all the variables prior to starting a project so you know, up front, what your estimated cost will be. Once a price is agreed on I will send an invoice to be paid 50% up front with the remainder due when you approve the final files.
