The Lost Boys started a love affair with the bloodsucking community!
A Guest Post by Sommer Marsden

I think I was fifteen when The Lost Boys came out. Somewhere in that ballpark, but judging by boyfriends (which is how I measure time before the man and kids…heh) I want to say fifteen was pretty accurate.
I’d never really seen a vampire movie before. I mean, I’d heard of vampires and had read about them—duh—but to my knowledge, it was my first semi-grown-up vampire movie. And it started a love affair with the bloodsucking community.

The Lost Boys had all the bells and whistles of movies of that era. The flash and the humor and the soundtrack that everyone wanted in their cassette players (that is right! Cassette players!).  It was vibrant with the classic, eye-searing eighties clothing and the off-the-cuff dialogue:

“You're a creature of the night, Michael! Just like out of a comic book! You're a vampire, Michael! My own brother, a god-damned, shit-sucking vampire! Boy, you wait 'til Mom finds out, buddy!”

It even had the hair…oh, the hair…

But I digress.

My main point is the vampires were hot in this movie. They were hot and that was unusual from what I’d seen and read up to that point. I’d been programmed at my tender age to think of vampires as creepy, pale, long-fingered beings that wanted me only to drain my blood and toss me away like a crumpled Capri Sun packet. But this movie showed them as sexy, hair-flipping, leather-wearing, bike riding, bad ass…yum.
I was paying attention.

Don’t get me wrong. The scenes in the cave etc where the boys are in full vampire form, not so hot. A bit bug-eyed and big-mouthed and yeah, talon-toting—not sexy. However, I dare you to find a girl who did not swoon a little when Michael started to change, donned his sunglasses, got his ear pierced, gave Star those needful glances. Find me a girl who was not secretly wishing she were Jamie Gertz during the cave scene (bed, not maggots). Or find a girl who did not wiggle in her seat and hold her breath when Michael and David had at it out mano a mano mid-air—it was practically a sex scene!

The scares were few, the laughs were plentiful, the outfits were…well, sometimes frightening. Let’s not even talk about Corey Haim’s BORN TO SHOP shirt. That might have been the most terrifying scene of the movie. But what THE LOST BOYS did was set up in my fifteen (I’m pretty sure) year old mind that vampires=hot, sexy, campy humor, quick wit,  and hair.

It wasn’t until after the fact that I saw a movie called FRIGHT NIGHT on VHS. That’s right, VHS, shut up! And then the whole vampires can be sexy (at least until they attain full vampire form) idea was reinforced—thank you ,Christopher Sarandon and you’re snug man-slacks.

If you boil it down to true facts *snort*, THE LOST BOYS will always be the high water mark for vampires to yours truly. I doubt I could attempt to write vampires without the humor and the fun woven in there somewhere. It just wouldn’t be possible.

In my new book BIG BAD—just out yesterday, woot!—I’m willing to bet that you could put a sorta kinda familiar face on Tyler Gent, my resident handsome, love-struck, lusting vamp. In fact, to be perfectly honest it, wasn’t until I was asked to participate in Vampire Awareness Month that I realized…he might…could…possibly…look just a bit like Michael.

Go figure. Psyches…such strange creatures.

XOXO

You have been warned!

“It’s a bad idea, Ruby Sue.”
“Shh, you just think that because you want me all for yourself.”
Tyler’s eyes flashed a sharp green in the low bar light. “Is this the part where I refute your statement?”
Blood rushed to my cheeks and my body warmed. I saw his nostrils flare as he caught the scent of my blood. We’d been doing the friend/lover dance for months now and in that instant, I just wanted to push him back and climb aboard. But we were in a bar, he was almost drooling at the scent of my blush and I was trying to explain to him why he should formally introduce me to Ellis Bach.
I twirled my wine glass by the stem. “Yes?”
“Not gonna happen.”
“Hungry?” I asked, just to fuck with him.
“Always.”
His pupils had dilated and his fangs were extended just enough that I could hear the slight lisp they produced. I put my hand on his leg and patted. “Sorry.”
Tyler looked away from me before speaking.
“It’s worse with you. Because I want you.” He tossed his head at the bar patrons, “With them, it’s like smelling French fries and knowing it’s not time to eat. It’s something I can kind of acknowledge and ignore it. But with you…”
“With me?”
“I want more than a snack,” he said and moved my hand.
“We’re getting there.”
“Oh are we?”
“We are.” I gave a decisive nod. “I just need to know I won’t lose you as a friend if we…”
“Fuck?”
“That.”
“Make love?”
“And that.”
Tyler leaned in and smelled me. It made my skin tingle, the look he got in his eye. “Screw, bang, diddle, fuck?” he breathed.
“You already said fuck.” My voice was high and thin. I sounded weak and easily swayed. Funny, I felt weak and easily swayed.
“It’s worth mentioning twice.”
Tyler was a vampire when I met him. Turned at twenty-two by a mugger who was actually just a starving vamp, I’d never known him when he was feral. Bleak is how he put it. Everything was bleak. It was all about food and fucking and survival until the fog cleared and he had his wits about him again. It had been two years of bleak and then he’d come to. That was two years before he met me working in the basement of a framing store. A part time job for both of us that had long ago ended. But the friendship hadn’t.
Part of me would have wanted to see him bleak—the idea sent a shiver up my back. Part of me was grateful that I knew him now—handsome, sane with a huge amount of restraint.
“Back to Ellis Bach,” I said.
Tyler rolled his eyes and took a swig of beer. Contrary to popular belief, he could drink whatever he wanted and even eat too. It’s just with a stomach not technically  needed to process food any more, it wasn’t always comfortable. He tended to stick with liquid stuff or soft food. He was—in fact—a pudding freak. Loved the stuff. But on his birthday and often Christmas, a steak seared just long enough to not earn him curious glances was something he treated himself to.
“Why Ellis? I know tons of flea bitten—I mean, I know tons of weres,” he said and winked.
“Flea-bitten? Jeeze, jealous much?”
I put my hand back on his leg. The urge to touch him was overwhelming. I’m always attracted to Tyler, but the hint of jealousy had turned his gorgeous eyes a surreal shade of emerald and I savored his protectiveness the same as I savored the smell of him. Leather, cold air, dead leaves.
Tyler took my hand and yanked it under the small table with a hard tug. He put my fingers to the cool denim that covered his cock. I felt his erection and my breath caught in my throat. “Not much,” he almost growled. “Entirely. I am entirely jealous. I don’t want you to want Ellis. I want you to want me.”
He had leaned in close so that his lips brushed my ear as he spoke, Tyler tucked a hunk of my dark blonde hair behind my ear and bit the lobe just enough to get my pulse slamming. My body went hot and wet between my legs and my heart felt fit to burst out of my chest. The cage of my ribs was not enough to contain it.
I turned fast, kissing him, tasting his lager on my lips. The cool brush of his tongue over mine. “I do want you, Ty. I do.”
“Then let me take you home.”
“Our friendship—“
“Will not suffer, I assure you. I promise. I swear. I put my hand on a Bible and pledge an oath.”
“Won’t you burst into flames?” I managed. I knew the answer but I liked to fuck with him.
“Please. You know better by now. That is an old wives’ tale right up there with garlic, no solid food, no sunlight etc.”
He was quicker to burn than others and prolonged exposure made him ill. Gave him the vampire version of the flu. Quick  ins and outs to go from point a to point b took getting accustomed to, but seasoned vamps didn’t give it a second thought.
“I know.”
“Come home with me.”
“Tyler—“
“Come home with me.” He pressed my hand more firmly to his hard cock and I squeezed. His eyes fluttered, his dark lashes brushing his pale skin turned me on. I squeezed again. “Ruby Sue, come home with me.”
“Stop using my middle name,” I scolded.
“I will. If you come home with me.”
“I go home with you all the time.”
“Come home to my bed with me. Come be with me. Spend the night. Naked,” he whispered and chuckled softly.
“Ty—“ I sighed.
“If you do, I’ll consider the whole Ellis Bach thing.”
“Cheater,” I said.
“You know it.”
“That’s not fair.”
“It is if it gets me what I want.”
“What about me?” I asked, but my hand was still on his fly.
He pushed his hand down over mine so I could feel how big he was, how ready. “You want it, too, Ruby.”
“I know.”

Lust according to Ruby:
You read those books where they explain it all away. They make it fine with rationalization. But what if I just want to? What if that's my whole reason? My life is not a romance novel. I don’t need justification. I’m a grown woman who knows what she wants.
I want Ellis. And I want Tyler.
And I won’t apologize...
What’s worse than wanting both your best friend who’s a vampire and the just-back-in-town alpha werewolf you find yourself fixated on? Finding out that the werewolf in question wants you, too. But he isn’t too keen on the sharing part. Oh, and by the way, you’re his dead mate.
Okay, okay, dead is harsh—reincarnated.
What’s worse than that? Realizing that you believe the whole crazy tale of reincarnation. Because it seems to be true.
And yet you still want them both—together. Vampire and werewolf and you in the middle. Stuck between two predators who want you and only you. To complicate it all, you find out that you can have it. With your new/old mate’s blessing. But just one time before he claims you as his.
Are you brave enough to take it? That one shot?
Well...Are you?

(((waves)) It's easy to understand why anyone was drawn to vampires. Hard not to have been. Book sounds great.

Howdy ma'ams! Lost Boys, huh. I enjoyed that one, but for pure vampire lusty goodness, I must admit I prefer watching the other Sarandon gettin' her wild thing on with Catherine Deneuve in Hunger...

Fantabulous. I'd forgotten that. The Hunger was a goodun.

The lost boys was the first sexy vampire movie I watched too! I was well under teenage age but my mom would always make me walk out at the campfire scene when they like rip them up and eat them lol. I blame that movie for my vampire obsession totally! And I just bout the book couldn't resist I wanted to read more lol.

Thanks so much, Linds. I hoe you enjoy it.

I admit, when boy child turned 13 (that was my age I'd decided on) I was so excited for him to sit down and watch it with me. It's one of the few movies I've built up over the years (LOL) that lived up to his expectations. It's still one of his faves too. Which is pretty nifty. :)

Oh yes, Lost Boys made every other long haired teenage boy "pale" in comparison! We must have been about the same age, yet now at nearly 40 I can still quote most of that movie having watched it on (gasp) VHS a million and one times! Looking forward to reading Big Bad!!!

Catching up on the tour.

Vamps? Where? (or is that Were? LOL).

Sexy? Always - and though Gary Oldman wasn't always sexy in Dracula - speaking of crossing oceans of time with that Hungarian accent (did I get that right? Oh well, either way..) made my insides go gooey.

Keifer in Lost Boys - rawr mamma. S'all I can say.

Should I get chosen (I already gots the book) toss me away and pick another lucky ducky winner. :D

The Lost Boys... I could go on and on. I was nine or so, and it rocked my world. Rocked it with the boys. Rocked it with Star, the coolest chick ever. Rocked it with the cool house with stuffed dead things. Rocked it with the Corey's. (My heart still misses Haim.)
And don't forget about Near Dark, which sadly lost a lot of media attention to The Lost Boys. It is simply a beautiful movie. I loved the way the night came alive as a character. And the music was perfect.
And Fright Night, I just watched it last night. Yes, again. After seeing the remake a few weeks ago, someone on Facebook was completely shocked to see me write "It was okay, but farrell is no Sarandon". Really? That's shocking? Am I the only one that missed the dance scene in the sequel? You know what? They didn't do it because they couldn't get it right like Sarandon did. Even in that horrible tracksuit, he was nothing but pure sex.
I'm going to shut my mouth now... And go hit the fast forward button on Fright Night.
