Sample Dark Salvation by Katie Salidas

Sample Excerpt: Dark Salvation

He found Lysander sitting alone at a small table along thewall pretending to nurse a beer.
“That is the old Nicholas. I have missed you, friend.” Heheld up the bottle in salute.
“Don’t patronize,” Nicholas retorted.
“Well, at least for a few moments, you appeared to be happy. What about the girl? Did you not like her?”
Nicholas heard the wary edge in Lysander’s voice. It annoyedhim that his friend would try so hard to force him to meet a woman. He wasn’tready, might not be ready for centuries. Why wouldn’t Lysander just drop it?
“I don’t like ignorance,” Nicholas grumbled under hisbreath. A lie, really. His reasons for not pursuing the woman had nothing to dowith her perceived intelligence. He found her to be quite attractive, even ifher taste in men was questionable, but he was just not in the mood tonight.
“Come now, that is hardly fair. Look at where we are.Alcohol is in abundance and inhibitions are low.”
“Then I hope for her sake that she’s learned to watch herdrink. Why are you pressing the matter?”
“Because she is staring at you.” Lysander nodded in thewoman’s direction.
“Really?” Nicholas’s voice was laced with sarcasm. “She toldme to go fuck myself.”
“Then she must really like you.” Amusement lit in Lysander’seyes as he stared over Nicholas’s shoulder toward the dark-haired lady.
Nicholas shrugged, trying to act as if he could care less.“It’s my animal magnetism, what can I say?”
“It must be something, she is still staring.”
He’d hoped that Lysander had been pulling his chain, but theway he continued to look in her direction had Nicholas’s curiosity piqued. Heturned around and sure enough, she was staring, but this was no lusty gaze. There was something cold and calculating about the way her eyes werescrutinizing him.
He caught a flash of recognition in her penetrating gaze. She did not waver or cower away when Nicholas met her eyes either. Somethingwas off about her. No normal mundane human acted this way. Perhaps he hadmisjudged her.
Calling on his years of experience, Nicholas quieted hismind, blocking out all sounds in the room. He locked eyes with the woman, focusing, making their connection the only thing in existence. Through thatconnection, he reached out with his mind. Turnaround, and pretend you never saw me. He sent the message with a push ofhis power.
The woman blinked as if startled, her face contorted withconfusion, then relaxed in a knowing smile. She turned back around to face thebar.
“Pity, she was cute,” Lysander’s broke through hisconnection. “Better luck next time.”
Nicholas ground his teeth. He shook his head slowly, stillstaring in her direction. “Drop it. She’s not an ordinary woman.” Worry beganto swim around in his mind, mingling with thoughts he’d rather not see come tolife. “We’d best get out of here.”
“What do you mean?”
“She knows something. She’s strong, mentally. Somehow, shewas able to block me.”
“She is a thing of curiosity,” Lysander said as if he wantedto study her. “Are you sure we should not attempt to make friends?”
“I don’t need anymore friends,” Nicholas growled.

Billionaire CEO of Blakely Incorporated, Natasha runs her empire with an eagle eye for every detail. She's an obsessive, compulsive, micromanaging hard-ass, consumed by the need to control every aspect of her life and her business.

But underneath that seemingly strong façade, Natasha is a swirling mess of anger, anxiety and sexual addiction. Only her therapist, Dr. Benson, knows how close she is to burning out...or exploding. He insists on a radical form of treatment - Submission Therapy - knowing that it's her only hope.

Skeptical but intrigued, Natasha agrees to attend the first session. What she finds there is an erotically-charged environment that will forgive none of her habitual bad behavior. And a steely-eyed man who seems to read her every desire - even the ones she won't admit to herself.

Will Natasha learn what it means to submit? Or will she allow her brittle pride to rob her of what she truly needs?

Becoming a vampire is easy. Living with the condition...that's the hard part.

Newbie vampire Alyssa never asked for this life, but now it's all she has. Rescued from death by Lysander, the aloof and sexy leader of the Peregrinus vampire clan, she's barely cut her teeth before she becomes a target.

Kallisto, an ancient and vindictive vampire queen – and Lysander's old mate - wants nothing less than final death for her former lover and his new toy. She's not above letting the Acta Sanctorum, and its greatest vampire hunter, Santino, know exactly where the clan can be found.

With no time to mourn her old life, Alyssa's survival depends on her new family. She will have to stand alongside Lysander and fight against two enemies who will stop at nothing to destroy them.

Dangerous Temptation by Catrina Barton

Title: Dangerous Temptation
Author : Catrina Barton
Genre: YA Paranormal Romance
Format: (print, ebook, or both) E-book for now. Print to come later.

Tell us the story behind the story. What inspired you to write this novel?  Ever since I was a kid, I've been fascinated with shape shifters. Paranaormal offers a vast array of elements to play with.  I've always wanted to write a story with tiger shifters.
Tell us about the book cover. Hubby made it. I gave him the basic concept and he played with it until we found one we both loved.
How does it represent your book? It has both of the main characters on it, and shows the rain forest where most of the story takes place.
How did you choose the artwork? I wanted something that lent a mystical or majical feel to it, while staying YA. I adore how the tiger head looks like it's rising out of the steam above the water.

Dangerous Temptation:
Seventeen year-old orphan Kaitlin Sinclair's world gets turned upside down when she's forced to move half way around the world to Indonesia with her uncle she never knew existed. Things get worse when the demons she left behind in America follow her to the land of intrigue.

Her uncle forces her to attend a celebration where she meets Cadmon, a mysterious, captivating stranger, who reveals that he knew her parents. She uncovers secrets that in the wrong hands could destroy his endangered clan of were-tigers and the entire world.

When Kaitlin dives into a foreign culture, full of mystique and dangers everywhere she turns, keeping her heart safe might prove as impossible as staying alive!

Long Excerpt:

The clearing fell silent as a man with shaggy, dirty blond hair which reached his shoulders, approached with a wide, purposeful stride. His shoulders were back, head held high and chest out. Piercing green eyes zeroed in on her.
Kaitlin inhaled a sharp breath and felt as if his eyes stared through to her soul. She shifted on the balls of her feet, and licked her bottom lip.
Ean’s body went rigid. A look of caution crossed his face as the man approached them.
“Evening,” the stranger greeted with a lazy drawl. His eyes never left her face. “Who is this exquisite young lady?”
His eyes settled on Ean’s hands on her hips. To Kaitlin’s chagrin her cheeks heated.
“Why are you here?” Ean moved Kaitlin closer to his body.
She braced her hands on his chest and gasped. “Who’s this?” She pulled back.
“Cadmon Quinn, madam.” He bowed. ”It’s a pleasure to meet you.” He grabbed her hand and brushed a kiss on the back of it.
Her eyes widened. Butterflies brushed inside her stomach.
“Smooth.” She slipped her hand free and rubbed it down the side of her dress to stop the tingles and shake off the electric jolt.
“She’s charming.” A corner of his mouth tilted. “Perhaps she will save me a dance?”
“She has a name.” She removed Ean’s hands from her hips and then turned to face Cadmon. “It’s Kate. Use it.” She raised her chin and planted her hands on her hips.
“Call me Cade.” He flashed an amused smile.
“What do you want?” Ean stepped between them and squared his shoulders.
“Couldn't resis introducing myself to your lovely cousin.” Cadmon sidestepped Ean with a smile, and then twirled his forefinger through one of her banana curls. “Interesting choice.” he gave it a loght tug. Her pulse quickened.
“I won’t let you, or my father put her through anything else.” Ean took Kaitlin by the elbow and stormed away.
She glanced back at Cadmon, who continued to watch her as he swaggered over to the elders, and picked up a tall glass of red wine. He saluted her with the drink, then sipped.
Kaitlin swallowed and turned around to break the eye contact. Was he a natural charmer, or was it an act? She hadn’t seen him talk to anyone else, so maybe he was the silent type?
Ean pressed a cool glass against her hand.
“What did you mean?” Her gaze locked with his as she sipped the fruity drink.
His brow rose.
“Why would they want to hurt me?” She took another sip.
“He and Father are not on friendly terms.” Ean scowled and sipped his glass.
“Why so defensive?” She placed her glass on the table and rested her hands on her hips.
Ean placed his glass down and grabbed her by the arms. “He’s dangerous, and will only bring you trouble.”
Cadmon appeared harmless, but the sheer magnetism of the man told her otherwise. What interest would he have in a girl like her? Was he one of those rich playboys? She frowned.
“Hungry?” Ean's fingers relaxed around her arms.
“I’m going to take a walk.” The thought of food made her stomach queasy.
“Stay on the path, Katie.” He frowned. “Want some company?”
“I need to clear my head.” She walked along the small dirt path that led over to the river. Inhaling the damp air she sat, and tucked her dress beneath her.
She closed her eyes and allowed her fingers to glide through the cool liquid, wishing she could peel off her dress and swim.
Her eyes opened and she frowned at her reflection. Laneca would give her a serious earful if she saw how heavy the bags were under her eyes.
“You shouldn’t be here alone.” Cadmon held out a plate of food.
“I shouldn’t be here at all.” She stared at the food, then looked away.
“You need to eat.” He passed her the plate and a glass of wine.
“Why are you so interested in me?” She sat the drink and plate on the grass.
“Eat.” He sat beside her with one leg stretched out and the other knee bent, with an arm resting on his bent knee.
“I’m not–” her stomach rumbled. She closed her mouth, cheeks stained.
“When is the last time you let someone look after you?” He picked up his plate and bit into his meat.
She twirled the meat-kabob with her fingers.
“Why so quiet?” He raised a brow.
She bit into her meat and closed her eyes as the combined juices of the roasted boar, a hint of ginger and oregano danced over her tongue. She hadn’t realized how hungry she was until she stared at her empty plate.
He chuckled.
She stared at the trees and wondered how the eagle nest back home was. The eggs should hatch any day. One more thing to add to the growing list of things she’d miss.
“How about that dance?” He stood up, holding out his hand.
After a moment she placed her hand in his.
He pulled her to her feet and into his arms, then spun her around.
“Why so interested?”
“Are you always this suspicious?” He swayed their bodies to the music and kept one arm around her waist as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
She’d never been held so close while dancing. It felt good to be held again, even by a stranger. She closed her eyes.
Something felt familiar about him, as if she’d met him before, desppite that she’d never seen him till tonight. How odd…
Inhaling she tried to figure him out. Maybe he wanted a young debutante to hang off his arm? She scowled. It would explain why he’d chosen her to talk to out of all the more sophisticated women in attendance. Was it because she was Ean’s cousin?
“You always this evasive? She gazed into his eyes. They were the most unusual green she’d ever seen, yet seemed to suit him.
He spun her away, then pulled her back, and dipped her as the song’s tempo increased.
Her heart rate sped up. She clung to him.  Definitely a first. She’d seen that move in some of the old movies, but had never experienced it until tonight.
“Kaitlin!” Her uncle’s voice caused heat to crash on her face as Cadmon righted her.
“Hello, Nigel.” Cadmon kept his arm around her waist, with her pressed tight against his side.

Dark Salvation - Behind the Characters

Before I began to pen the latest release in the Immortalis Series, Dark Salvation, I ran a contest here on the blog. Become a Character! It was a smashing success with tons of entrants. Sadly, only one could be chosen. Today I have here here with me, Catrina Barton, the muse behind the character of Kitara Vanders.

KS: Catrina, first I want to thank you for participating in the Become A Character contest. It was a great success and you, of course, got the grand prize. How excited were you to win the contest?

Catrina: Extremely. You're my fave UF author, and I adore the Immortallis series.

KS: You’ve read the other books in the Immortalis series so you are well versed in the characters. Was Nicholas your first choice for your character’s “mate?”

Catrina: Yes. I have enjoyed his character from the beginning.

KS: You inspired the character Kitara Vanders. What traits were you most interested in seeing brought out into this character?

Catrina: Her spukiness, independence, and love of nature. Aslo her understanding animals.

KS: The name Kitara is quite an interesting one.

Catrina: Thank you.

K.S: How did you select that for the name?

Catrina: I wanted something that sounded rather unique.

K.S: Does it hold some importance to you?

Catrina: Not really. I looked for a name that wasn't overused, and tried to put a fresh spin on it.

K.S: Is there any background on the meaning or heritage of this name?

Catrina: Nope, it's completely made up.

KS: You gave me a list of specifics on the character, things like: family, personality, attitude, etc… Do you feel the character created stuck closely to your original vision?

Catrina: Absolutely. You nailed the character as if you'd actually crawled inside my mind.

KS: You’ve had a chance to read the story. How did you feel about Kitara and Nicholas’s interactions?
Catrina: They are perfect. I adore how they play off each other and keep each other on their toes.

KS: No spoilers… Just feeling only. Were you satisfied with the way the story ended?

Catrina: I was shocked, but yes. I adored the ending.

KS: If there was anything you could change about the character, what would it be?

Catrina: The scent of orange. I'd have changed that to lavender and vanilla, or cinnamon.

KS: Catrina, it has been a pleasure working with you on this book.

Catrina: Thank you. It's one I will treasure always.

K.S: I do hope you are happy with the way Kitara turned out.

Catrina: Absolutely.

K.S: Is there anything else you want to add before we get on to some teasers for our readers?

Catrina: Thank you for such a wonderful opportunity. It's an amazing experience.

Let's all give Catrina a round of applause!! She was a wonderful muse and has been a dedicated reader of the Immortalis series since the very beginning!

Now... On to some fun. How about a little tease, shall we?

Dark Salvation
Excerpt

He looked at his arm. The wound was still there, but it had begun to scab over. Her blood was already working magic. “You took a dangerous risk.”
“I was armed.” She held the blade, a 10-inch chef’s knife up ready to strike.
Without warning, Nicholas lunged forward and grabbed Kitara’s wrist in a crushing grip. He pushed her backwards, pinning her to the wall with his body. She tried to struggle, but was no match for Nicholas. He took her free hand and held it firm against the wall.
Kitara’s heartbeat raced, vibrating through her chest into Nicholas’s body. The tantalizing thump-thump sent all of his blood rushing south. A new need arose within Nicholas. One he had not satisfied in a long while. Kitara’s breath shuddered. Nicholas felt the contracting of her muscles as she tried to fight his grip and bring the knife down upon him. Her human strength was nothing. Even in his weakened state he held her firm, but he admired her spirit. The smell of her fear, and her sweet orange and vanilla scent, called out to him. He bent his head low to take a better whiff. His nose grazed the soft skin at the base of her neck. She was a delicious temptation. He’d already sampled her blood once; he knew how rich and sweet she tasted, and he longed for more. He bent lower, drawing out the moment, savoring the anticipation, reveling in the frantic thump-thump of her calling heart, the pulsing artery in her neck practically begging for him to open up and devour all she had to give. Nicholas let out a slow breath and reined in his hunger. He gently pressed his lips against the soft warmth of her skin. Just a simple kiss, but that alone had its own satisfying effect.
Kitara’s body spasmed under his grip. She let out a strangled squeal, then went slack in his arms.
Nicholas held her firm, wrapping one arm around her waist, taking on her weight and keeping her upright. “Have I made my point?” Husky need filled his voice. Oh, how he wanted to slake his desire for her blood and her body! But that could not happen.
“Yes.” Her words came out in a whisper. The heat from her breath blew against his ear and her body pressed so close to his. Her warmth. Her scent. He was the one supposed to be in control, yet everything about her made him want to sit up and beg like a dog. All of his remaining blood had traveled down south, and suddenly his pants became unbearably tight.
