Editor Questions

Revisiting the, editor topic for a moment.

For those of you out there in blogger land, if you have used, or have considered using an editor to review your work prior to submitting to agents and publishers. Tell me how the process worked.

How did you search for them?
What questions did you ask of them?
Did you research them on Predators and Editors? Maybe even check them out on Absolute Write
Did you choose a freelance editor or go with an editing service?
How much communication was there between you and your editor?

and finally...

Did you feel the service was valuable?

Hoping to read some answers, as I've been wondering about this exact same thing. I once had an editor of a well-known magazine read my novel, but she did it more for character consistency, flow, etc. I'll check back to read responses. Great question!

Do you mean hiring an editor to review your ms before submission? I have not done that - but know some who have. It can get pricey but they say it is a good investment.

Interesting!

Wendy,

I too am interested in some answers here. I think I might want to hire an editor to look at my MS, but I don't know what to expect.

If Erin (screaming guppy) doesn't comment on this post, get a hold of her. She has some experience with this.

Thanks, I saw her recent post. I'll have to see if I can pick her brain.

I have exhausted the internet trying to figure out who and how much money I might spend on this situation. Still unsure.

I use a professional editor and it's been an awesome experience. It is pricey, but she catches things that I absolutely love. She doesn't nitpick over adverbs and the kinds of things that are easy to change. She finds the deeper issues like scene tension, sensory details, character conflict, and other things I would have a hard time noticing in my own editing.

Rachelle Gardner has a suggested list of professional editors on her website.

You could try asking arounf Verla Kay's website. There are several threads there about this with people speaking up about their experiences. :-)
